What is the difference between pruning & topping?

Pruning established trees will reduce conditions that may contribute to weakness and failure, provide desired clearance and improve the health and outward appearance.

Topping (aka heading, tipping, rounding over) is the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches to stubs or small lateral branches, essentially taking off the top crown of the tree.

Topping is most commonly requested to reduce the size of a tree. Homeowners may feel that their trees have become too large for their property and often fear that tall trees may pose a risk. However, topping is not a viable method of height reduction nor does it reduce the hazard. In fact, topping will make a tree more hazardous in the long term.

Does moss or mistletoe hurt or kill my tree?

While moss does not pose a direct health threat to your trees it can be an unsightly nuisance and removing it can improve the look of the trees.

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that grows attached to and penetrating within the branches of a tree. It can weaken or destroy the trees it infests, especially if the tree has been compromised by pests, storms, or old age.

How do you get rid of a stump?

Our primary method of stump removal is stump grinding. We have both large heavy-duty grinders and smaller grinders to use where access is limited. Stumps can also be dug out of the ground if necessary.

Should tree cuts or wounds be painted?

No, research has shown that the old practice of applying wound dressing is not beneficial to the tree. In fact, it can encourage detrimental microorganism growth.

Should I hire a Professional Mangrove Trimmer (PMT) or can I trim the mangroves on my property myself?

Mangroves are protected under the State of Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations. You need a permit from the DEP or a certified mangrove trimmer for all mangrove trimming.

What should I do to prepare for Hurricane Season?

A tree’s condition before a storm will determine how safe that tree is during a storm. One of our ISA Certified Arborists can assess the warning signs of potential tree problems and recommend ways to maintain healthy trees through the storm season and minimize the potential damage to both people and property.
